Walk Story at Mari’s Gardens

Snip & ServeA huge “MAHALO!” to Mari’s Gardens President/CEO, Fred Lau, and Chef Elmer Guzman from Poke Stop for hosting a wonderful Walk Story event for the Ipu Waiwai Kula – ‘AE ohana! To cap off our 3-year project in West O‘ahu, our traditional ‘recap and reflect’ evaluation activity – Walk Story – was held at Mari’s Gardens to share a big vision of diversified agriculture and food independence for Hawai‘i.

The event began with an hour-long tour of Mari’s Gardens – the largest commercial sustainable farm in the State. Mr. Lau led the tour, sharing triumphs, challenges and on-going research projects. After the tour, our featured educators (Jewelynn Kirkland from Nanakuli High School and Bruce Moku from Wai‘anae Intermediate School) reflected on project experiences and shared their vision for continuing efforts. Jon Lance of Hapa Farms (a KULA Project Partner) shared our collaborative expansion efforts in Pearl City and Ewa Beach schools. Principal Darin Pilialoha (Nanakuli Intermediate & High School) shared his vision for a school-wide sustainability effort and his appreciation for Ms. Kirkland’s inspiring efforts.

Following reflections, the group was treated to a fabulous 4-course gourmet meal prepared by Chef Guzman and his staff. All ingredients were locally produced and most were from Mari’s Gardens. The evening ended with each attendee receiving a bagful of Mari’s Garden hydroponic/aquaponic grown produce.
