Nanakuli Aquaponics ROCKS!

05.12aThe Ipu Waiwai Kula – ‘AE (Aquaponics in Education) program has some awesome updates! Thanks to hard working educator, Jewelynn Kirkland, volunteers, community partners and 9th grade students at Nanakuli Intermediate and High School, new walkways lined with ‘uala (sweet potato) have been installed and pa pohaku (rock walls) have been built around the lo‘i (irrigated terrace) surrounding the greenhouse. Plantings will include a noni tree, popolo (Hawaiian pokeberry), kinehi (Spanish needle), olena (tumeric), kalo (taro), red cherry tomatoes, Chinese celery, Russian Comfrey, ni‘oi (beach cherry) and mamaki (Waimea pipturus).
