KULA: Outdoor Classrooms

OutdoorClassroomThe Ipu Waiwai Kula – ‘AE project embraces the “extended classroom” concept. In March, students from Wai‘anae Intermediate School visited the Waikalua Loko Fishpond in Kaneohe (on the opposite coast on the island of O‘ahu) for an immersive learning experience about ancient Hawaiian agricultural practices and 21st century solutions to restore the fishpond to its original condition.

Students were able to learn about ahupuaa – its historical significance and value, understand the impact of native and invasive plant species and examine life in the fishpond.

MAHALO! to the staff and docents from the Waikalua Loko Fishpond Preservation Society for an awesome field trip!
