La‘au Lapa‘au: Healing with Native Plants

isisHawaii’s “Ipu Waiwai Kula ‘AE” Aquaponics in Education project has provided wonderful opportunities to connect local professionals from academia, industry and the community to educators to co-design culturally responsive project-based activities for students.

One such professional is Leinaala Bright – a certified healing practitioner – who has helped our school partners to better understand connections between Western science and traditional Native Hawaiian practices. We were fortunate to have her facilitate an introductory workshop on la‘au lapa‘au, or the art of healing with native plants. Here is a sample lesson where Ms. Bright uses the ‘uhaloa (Waltheria indica) plant to make oils for lomilomi (massage).
